S4C Journalism Scholarship

S4C wants to ensure that talented people have the opportunity to develop their journalism skills, whatever their background. Each year, the S4C Journalism Scholarship offers financial assistance, as well as practical career experience and opportunities, to someone studying on the JOMEC MA Broadcast Journalism course in Cardiff University.

This is what the Scholarship offers in 2025:

  • Course fee (£11,700) paid by S4C
  • Work experience throughout the year with the S4C, BBC and ITV news teams, working on digital and linear productions
  • An opportunity to have a period of paid work with S4C after the course has finished.

Do I fit the bill?

You will have a keen interest in the world about you and be inquisitive to discover more.

You will be able to bring new stories to us. There are some groups of people who are underrepresented in our workforce, and we are determined to change that. So you can apply for the Scholarship if you:

  • come from a minority ethnic community
  • have a disability
  • come from a disadvantaged socio-economic background and/or
  • are the first person in your family to speak Welsh fluently.

You will be able to show us examples of content you have already created and shared publicly (e.g. on vlogs, or student publications).

You will have some Welsh skills; we will be able to support you to help improve your language skills before and during the course.

You will have to meet the university's requirements for the course.

How do I apply?

There are two steps to the process; it's very important that you complete both of them.

Step one: let us at S4C know that you are applying, by filling out a form.

The form will ask general questions (name, address, etc). Then you will need to submit:

  • a statement of up to 250 words or
  • a video up to two minutes long.

In the statement or the video we want you to tell us:

  • Why do you want to have this opportunity?
  • How do you meet our diversity criteria?
  • What kind of Welsh language skills do you have?

You can apply here. The form needs to be submitted by 9am, Monday 2 June 2025.

We are very keen to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities. So, if you need any reasonable adjustments to support you to apply for this opportunity, get in touch as soon as possible to tell us what you need.

Step two: make an official application to Cardiff University

You will need to go through the application process for JOMEC to make an official application for a place on the course.

What happens next?

After the Scholarship's closing date, S4C and Cardiff University will look at the applications together and choose who will receive the Scholarship.

We will write to you by Monday, 30 June to let you know if you have been successful or not.
